You've heard the complaints before: JAST games have no photoshop!
Well here's one for "3 Sisters"!

It works by running you through "overlay" files like those the game
uses, but which only display the pictures or animations, and play
music instead of choosing commands like "THINK". And there's a patched
saved game which jumps into this photoshop-type of sequence. I'd
suspected that this was about the only way to create a photoshop for
a game like this, short of rewriting the game code, but I'd never
gotten around to actually figuring out the data formats and creating
the files necessary. Luckily for me, great minds think alike :) and
Bowlingman did a pretty good job on an initial batch of files for this
game. All I've done is figured out some of the data formats given
Bowlingman's example, and made some of the files shorter and the
displays more user friendly.

How to use the files in the ZIP archive:
1. Locate your saved game(s) for 3 Sisters and/or your Windows
"temp" directory. If you find a file "SSSDATA1.000", you're in
the right place. Back up the existing one, then extract the
SSSDATA1.000 file from the ZIP archive to that directory.
If you have no existing file in your temp directory, don't
worry. Just unzip it there, and follow the rest of the steps.
2. Copy your 3 Sisters game files from the CD to a handy place on
your hard drive. This includes the 400 Mb "PAIN.DAT" file.
3. Now extract all the other files in the ZIP archive to the
3SIS\OVL directory on your hard drive.
4. Run the 3 Sisters game. If it has been a while, remember that
this game may not start properly under Windows 9x. Keep trying
either the "Sisters" or "Sisters2" shortcut until one gets past
the PMDIBM loading message. Once you have started the game,
load the first saved game. You should get a screen with some
advice to view the animations first (that's from the original
author of the photoshop files, I've never had a problem with
the graphics if they work at all), and then 3 choices.
View all the full-screen pictures in the game, the background
images, or the animations (which overlay on the backgrounds).
5. Right click at the 3 choices to get SAVE/LOAD/QUIT. QUIT will
take you back to the game's main menu. Remember that this game
will probably not play again under Windows 9x once you exit,
 until you reboot your computer.

There are 91 pictures, 31 backgrounds, and 40 animations in
this game. The only images you won't see are FLERIN, KITUNEM,
KITUNEM2, MEIF and SANSI - and that's because all of them will
crash the game if you try to display them this way.
All the music in the game is also played if you go through the
animations. There are 20 songs, numbered 1 to 22 except for 17
and 19. I liked #20 so much, it plays for animations 23 to 40.

Thanks to Bowlingman (bowlingman@gmx.net) for the initial version
of this. It was a good first effort, but didn't do the animations
on my system, and the files were larger than necessary.

Expect further refinements of this method to produce photoshops
for similar JAST games: Runaway City (Meisou), Setsuju (Snow Cat),
Tenshi Tachi no Gogo (Angel-C), Season of the Sakura, and
TK (Tenshi tachi no Gogo: Tenkousei, or Angels' Afternoon:
Transfer Student) - some of these are in English already.
But don't bug me about when they'll be out!
If you know what you're doing with a hex editor, you could do
 these yourself...
